On Tuesday, officials at Woodland Cemetery wound not comment about the damage. On Wednesday, they said all of the damage was confined to the historic section of the cemetery.
Flags were stolen from the grave site of the Wright Brothers. A flag was burned above the grave of Paul Lawrence Dunbar and some grave stones were overturned and broken.
A relative of the Wright Brothers said, "It's just a senseless act. It doesn't benefit anyone."
Stephen Wright is the Great-Grandnephew of Orville and Wilbur Wright.
"It saddens you to know that there are people out there that have nothing better to do with their time than destroy someone else's property," said Stephen Wright.
According to a news release from Woodland's President and CEO, the monuments were in the historic part of the cemetery behind the McMillan angel. He said it happened when vandals sneaked past a security guard.
"It's a very large piece of property and it would be easy enough just to slip over the fence if you really want to get in and do some harm. So, I really don't blame the security at the cemetery," said Wright. .
Wright also thinks it was likely a coincidence that the vandals chose the historic section of the cemetery to desicrate.
Wright said, "I think they just happened to be there and the Wright brothers grave site was there at the wrong place at the wrong time."
Dayton police estimate the damage at $25,000. No arrests have been made.
