New Information in Bizarre Murder Case

A judge delayed the first court appearance for a Randolph County man accused in the assisted suicide of his mother and the murder of his father.

Brian Scott Hartman, 33, was scheduled to have his arraignment on Tuesday, but it was rescheduled after he told a judge that he cannot afford an attorney.

Sheriff's deputies said Hartman told them that he agreed to a plan to shoot his father to death and assist in the suicide of his cancer-stricken mother.

Hartman was arrested and charged with murder and assisting suicide after deputies found his father, 53-year-old Brian Ellis Hartman dead in a container at his home last week.

Family members reported the elder Hartman missing after he failed to show up for his wife's funeral.

An autopsy was not performed on 52-year-old Cheri Hartman after she died because she had been suffering from cancer.
