New insights into fatal St. Marys shooting

ST. MARYS, Ohio -- Authorities in northwest Ohio say a former police officer didn't fire his gun before he was killed by a deputy over the weekend.
The shooting happened Friday after the former officer led deputies on a slow moving two-mile chase into the town of St. Marys. Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon says the ex-officer pulled into a gas station and got out of his SUV holding a gun.
That's when a deputy shot and killed Dennis Slone of Waynesfield. Slone was a St. Marys police officer for 15 months beginning in 1995. The police department says he didn't pass probation and was let go because of performance issues.
Authorities tell The Evening Leader they think the deputies followed proper procedure and that Slone's background with firearms made it a more dangerous situation.
