Chief Gessler will assume his new duties in Sidney by mid-summer. He will fill a vacancy created with the recent retirement of Chief Steve Wearly.
Gessler was among three finalists for the job. The other two finalists were internal candidates that included Capt. Rod Austin and Lt. William Balling.
Sidney City Manager Steve Stilwell said the selection process was difficult.
