The First Family announced they plan to stay in the Capitol after President Obama’s term ends in January 2017. The family plans to reside in D.C. until youngest daughter Sasha completes high school in the spring of 2019. While Obama visited with voters in Milwaukee he said, “Transferring someone in the middle of high school -- tough,” according to the Chicago Tribune.

Kalorama neighborhood

The Kalorama neighborhood is no stranger to presidents. Both Woodrow Wilson and William Taft lived in this neighborhood after their presidency. Even Franklin D. Roosevelt lived in this area when he was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy.

FUN FACT:  The French ambassador lives within walking distance from the Obama family’s new home.

The $7 million home

The home the Obama family plans to move into could be considered a small palace. The 8,200-square-foot home houses nine bedrooms with eight and a half baths. The home is worth $7,034,550, according to the 2016 assessment of the property.

FUN FACT: At that price, it is $858 per square foot.

Location, location, location

When looking for a home, location is what matters, and the Obamas are no different in this sense. They were able to find a home that was smack dab in the middle between Sasha’s school and the White House.

FUN FACT: Sasha’s school, Sidwell Friends, is only 2.2 miles away from the residence

Owner

If the Obamas are only leasing this $7 million property, who owns it?

John Lockhart, former press secretary and senior advisor for former President Bill Clinton, owns this mini-palace. Lockhart and his wife, Giovanna Gracy, moved to Manhattan after Lockhart accepted a job for the NFL in February, according to Politico.
