A fire official said the lone resident, an older man, was home alone when he smelled smoke.
He went to investigate and thought it was coming from the attic.
The official said when the resident opened a door, the fire suddenly flared up and forced him out of the house.
He went to a neighbor’s house to call 911.

Our photographer reports he could see a column of black smoke can be seen from Moorefield and Urbana roads.

Tanker trucks from neighboring jurisdictions are being called to a house fire in Urbana.
Crews were called out shortly after 2 p.m. to the home in the 800 block of East Dallas Road.
Departments from Mechanicsburg and Moorefield Twp. were called to provide mutual aid, according to scanner traffic.
