One arrested after attempting to avoid Butler County OVI checkpoint

A storm and staffing issues shortened an OVI checkpoint Saturday night in Hamilton, but one vehicle that attempted to avoid the checkpoint led to the driver being arrested on multiple charges.

The vehicle attempting to avoid the checkpoint at Pleasant and Hayes avenues was intercepted by a Hamilton police officer who was a part of the saturation patrols around the checkpoint, Pete Reising, Butler County OVI checkpoint coordinator said.

Reising said the driver was charged with felony possession of cocaine, felony tampering with evidence, misdemeanor marijuana possession, and for a parole violation.

Because of staffing issues, on the northbound lanes of Pleasant Avenue was checked during the checkpoint that ran from 10:15 p.m. to 1:43 a.m. Reising said 219 vehicles went through while the checkpoint was active and officers said 149 vehicles were checked.

The checkpoint shut down at 11:14 p.m. during the storm in which 70 cars passed through during that time.

Of the 149 vehicles checked, two vehicles were diverted for further investigation, but no arrests or citations were issued.

Another OVI checkpoint is planned for June 2 in Butler County. The exact time and location will be announced that day.
