Amazon’s work culture

Many, if not most of us, have bought something through Amazon. But what do you really know about the booming online company? The New York Times on Sunday peeked into the day-to-day working life of the company, and the portrait it painted wasn’t pretty.

The story depicted Amazon as a place where 80-hour-plus workweeks are expected, employees are encouraged to rat each other out online, meetings are so cut-throat that people often leave in tears, and where health issues and family needs are pointedly held against employees.

The story has led to considerable online discussion about the modern workplace. Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos told his workers, “I don’t recognize this Amazon and I very much hope you don’t, either,” the paper reported.
