On city trees and Big Macs

Some mail in response to recent columns.

Regarding McDonald’s bigger Big Mac, from Elton and Kathleen Moose: “My wife and I have often made comment about people eating these large sandwiches from the fast food stores. Yes, it causes obesity! Often when we buy, we ask for only ketchup and leave off all that sauce! It is not only fattening, but messy as well. Sometimes, I will take the meat off and eat it without the bun. I may eat some of the bun. Often, we take our meal home with us and eat it later.”

And from Mark Kelley, on the value of city trees: “Yes — trees release oxygen when they use energy from sunlight to make glucose from carbon dioxide and water. What a wonderful process. Big trees can pull 48 pounds of Co2 out of the air each growing season. Which begs the question. Why did Dayton Wright Brothers airport just level the southwest corner of all trees? Yes, they did harvest some of the big one’s but what a massacre of 80-year-old trees.”

We reported that the trees were in the way of flights, officials said, and taken out as a safety measure.
