Meet in vitro meat

Would you eat meat that doesn’t come from a slaughtered animal, but rather farmed in a laboratory?

You may have that option in a few years. Memphis Meats, a San Francisco-based food technology company founded by a Mayo Clinic-trained physician, a stem cell biologist and a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering unveiled the “world’s first cultured meatball” last month.

The in vitro beef grown from real meat cells is contamination free and can be harvested in a matter of a few weeks, according to Uma Valeti, CEO and cardiologist.

The company says their meat is safe and will help stop the slaughter of animals around the globe. “There is not enough resources to feed a growing world population,” Valeti says in a video featuring the lab-created meatball.
