From a graphic design standpoint, which is what I majored in, it represents wings or taking flight and movement. The only reason people are trying to see a "V" is because the original logo used "U" and "D". So now people are looking for the "U" which isn't even necessary when representing Dayton with a "D". People hate change plain and simple. They need to just get over it and realize there were probably many hands in the deciding factor of who chose this one. As a graphic designer myself, I just think the proportions of the wings to the "D" cause our eyes to want to make the wings a "U". If it were by itself, never had a previous logo, it would be a good logo. But not supporting the University, who is doing exceptionally well, because you don't like their logo is absurd. — HEATHER RAINS LATHAM
Someone (all of Dayton) should be outraged that the big wigs keep outsourcing these projects for UD in Dayton, Ohio to companies in Pennsylvania :: (Dayton- dying city with possible re-growth but re growth is outsourced… Hmmmm) —KRISTIN KAY
When you have donors willing to stop their funding to the university because of this, that should tell you there's a BIG problem. When alums, students, fans, and former athletes voice their dislike, that's also a problem. Out of the first 400 comments on UD's official post about the release, less than 10 percent were favorable. Other college fans have already begun making fun of the VD. It's only going to get worse. How do you spend a year and a half working on a design (reportedly at the marketing firm the son of a UD big wig works for), lay down a new court, and print up an overstock of brand new merchandise without giving a second thought to those that make/have made/will continue to make the school money? It's a whole attitude of "We're going to do what we want no matter what anyone else thinks." In some scenarios, that's not bad. When it comes to the branding of a school/team, it's awful. I will continue to support UD athletics proudly but you won't see me waste a dime on anything with the new logo. … You earned millions upon millions in revenue from a Cinderella season, captured the hearts of people in and out of Dayton, thrust your school into the national spotlight and this is the best you could come up with? Wow. — KELLI HALL
Add me to the list of alumni that hates the new logo. I hope UD officials realize their terrible mistake. — LISA GRIFFIN
"The design to the left of the 'D' is supposed to emphasize movement and progress." … The designer must've learned that in some graphic design class or something. I think people go to school and lose their common sense. — CHRIS SANDERS
I thought it looked like a D with wings the first time I saw it… I don’t see what the big deal is. Sorry. — SARAH JOLIE
One simple question. Did anyone test this idea with students, fans, alumni before announcing? As a US MBA alum, I would hope so. — BILL ZIMMER
If ain't broke, don't fix it. —DAVID MICHAEL EDWARDS
Looks like a take on the Philadelphia Flyers logo! As an alum, I like the old one better! — KEVIN FRALEY
