Return of woolly mammoths

Creatures resembling woolly mammoths could one day roam the earth.

That’s because scientists have sequenced the entire genetic code of the animal that went extinct about 4,000 years ago in order to get a better idea of the history of the species, how it was affected by climate change and why it eventually died out.

Moreover, scientists believe they can alter the chromosomes of an Asian elephant to construct an animal that’s much like the prehistoric beast — and not just for Jurassic Park-like amusement.

As reported by the Washington Post, Russian scientist Sergey Zimov believes mammoth-like animals could help restore the ecosystem of the Siberian tundra, which would bring back grassland, which would preserve the permafrost, which would slow down the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and retard climate change.
