The crack of the bat

Ah, baseball. Finally.

By the time you read this, the Reds will have opened their season with a home game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Downtown Cincinnati will be cleaning up from the big opening-day parade, and the will-they-or-won’t-they that gets us through another season will be under way.

Why do we so love it? There’s something about the start of baseball season that brings a small feeling of joy. In addition to the sights, smells and sounds of the ballpark — from the crowd hum to the perfect green of the field to the aroma of hot dogs and popcorn — the season brings anticipation, promise and possibilities. Winter is finally behind us (right?), and summer looms ahead. We know that baseball will carry us there and beyond it.

It seems the time to take a short break from the usual hard and hectic news of the day to just relax, enjoy and look forward to the fun.
