Thinking about weapons

Gun issues always draw strong commentary. In response to our story last week about state legislators considering loosening permit laws, reader Gloria Skurski wrote:

“It seems we have elected officials who want nearly anyone over 21 to be able to carry a gun, without a permit and without training. I would assume they know that guns are lethal weapons, designed to maim and kill. And yet they propose that they be carried about as casually and indiscriminately as, say, a cell phone. The question is: Why are we treating lethal weapons as a casual accessory to everyday living? Why not hand grenades? They would fit nicely into a purse or a glove compartment, and I’m sure some people would feel much safer if they had one.

“It seems that the key rationale is that Americans should have the freedom to carry a weapon so they can protect themselves and feel safer. My question is — how do you protect yourself from all of the people who are carrying guns?”
