Why do people hate their jobs?

TODAY’S MODERATOR

Most Americans aren’t very interested in their jobs, according to a recently released Gallup survey.

In fact, the survey says 52 percent are not actively “engaged” in the work they do, and another 18 percent “are actively disengaged in their work.”

That leaves only about 30 percent of us who say they are engaged and interested in their jobs, according to Gallup’s 2013 State of the American Workplace Report. So headlines like “Americans hate their jobs” may not be an exaggeration.

Why do you think so many are negative about their jobs, especially at a time when a lot of unemployed Americans would love to have those jobs? What makes you love or hate your job? (Don’t worry about your boss — we won’t print your name.) Has the recession played a role? What do you think companies can do to improve morale? Or do you think Americans have always tended to dislike their jobs?
