Work and purpose

How will people make a livelihood when robots replace doctors, truck drivers and others? Reader Pamela Gregg adds these ideas:

“I have two additional, deep concerns … the transition from human workers to robot workers will likely be a slow, painful process, where an increasing number of people lose their jobs to smart machines, placing a greater and greater burden on the economy and remaining workers until the conversion is finally made.

“The second concern has to do with the mounting evidence that meaning in a person’s life is the single biggest influence on a person’s emotional and physical state of being. For some, gardening and volunteering bring great joy. For many others, such as myself, the need to feel purpose at work — and that I am contributing in a significant way — keeps me balanced, even when other life challenges come along.”
