Parts Of Riverside Go Dark After Overnight Crash

Police in Riverside said a man driving early Tuesday morning went off the road and slammed into a power pole.

The crash happened around 4 a.m. on Linden Avenue between Woodman Drive and Spinning Road.

Investigators said the crash knocked out power to dozens of homes and businesses and sent 33-year-old Gregory Strader to a local hospital and then to jail.

Officers said the impact knocked live electrical lines to the ground and threatened the safety of those who came close to the crash, including a Riverside police officer who witnessed the crash.

Police asked for assistance from sheriff’s deputies in Montgomery County and from rangers from 5 Rivers Metroparks to help keep other drivers away from the danger zone.

Officials said the entire southern end of Riverside lost power. Crews from Dayton Power and Light arrived and began to repair the broken power line.

Sgt. Kim Griffin said they believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Strader suffered only minor injuries, but was taken to jail on suspicious of drunken driving.
