Firefighters rushed to the scene to help save the three before it was too late.
The parents were so desperate to save their child, that they were ready to toss the baby down from a third floor window to residents that had already escaped the building.
Firefighters realized that the smoke and flames were covering the hallway so they put a metal extension ladder in place raised it to the third floor and worked to rescue the three.
Firefighters climbed the ladder and grabbed the baby and carried the child to safety and then rescued the parents.
Vincent Wiley with the Dayton Fire Department said, “Great job. They made a great rescue, textbook through the window on a ladder. It did not last more than 20 to 30 seconds.”
As relief of the child and the parents being rescued, some residents also became angry. They said the woman who lived in the apartment where the fire started apparently grabbed her two children and left without telling anyone.
Stephanie Varner said, “She didn’t warn anybody.”
She said there would have not been a chance for a rescue or for anyone else to get out of the burning building if her brother, Jamell Haskins, had not come to visit and smelled smoke as he climbed up to her place.
Varner then said, “We heard the noise. My apartment’s right underneath.”
Jamell Haskins said, “It filled with smoke. Everybody started panicking, but we got everybody out pretty good.”
Firefighter said they feel fortunate there were no serious injuries. Investigators were called to the scene and began looking through the debris in the burned-out apartment. They have not ruled on an official cause for the fire.
