Severe weather and dramatic news events made headlines in the region during 2018. WHIO staff photographers were there to record it all. In some cases, especially during periods of severe weather, our viewers also helped record the news by sharing their iWitness 7 photos with us.
We’ve pulled together some of the top galleries from this year’s news events.
1. Ice storm blankets region: Severe weather on November 15 struck just as day dawned, causing issues for commuters, school districts and residents all over the area. Power outages affected thousands of customers as icy conditions brought down trees, poles and power lines all over southwestern Ohio.
2. Garbage truck slams into Xenia nursing home: A Rumple trash truck hit the Greenewood Manor nursing home in Xenia on June 21, injuring the driver and leaving a gaping hole in the side of the building. "...We just got hit by a trash truck," a 911 caller said. "It went through the back of the building. It is half in and half out."
3. Tornadoes confirmed in Clark, Greene counties: Severe weather struck on April 3, with heavy rains causing flooding all over the region. The National Weather Service confirmed two EF-1 tornadoes that caused some damage along their paths.
4. Active shooter report at Wright-Patt: A reported active shooter at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base on August 2 brought law enforcement agencies from all over the region to the base. Following a systematic search, no "real-world" shooter was found.
6. Dayton home explodes: One person was seriously injured when a gas explosion destroyed a house on George Street in Dayton on November 29.

7. Budweiser Clydesdale team visits Dayton: Smiles were everywhere as the famous horse team visited Dayton on March 28 to make several deliveries along Brown Street.
