According to a report filed by the NTSB, the pilot admitted to consuming alcohol before the flight, which took off from Hook Field 2 to 3 hours prior to the crash.
The airplane’s pilot, identified as Doug Morgan, of Middletown, has a hangar at Hook Field.
The report states that during an approach to land at another airport, the pilot attempted to activate the runway lights, but the lights wouldn’t activate. The pilot stated he then attempted to locate another airport, in which he flew into airspace without clearance.
The airplane ran out of fuel, and the pilot executed a forced landing, according to the report. The airplane then struck power lines.
The crash resulted in approximately 1,100 Dayton Power & Light customers losing power. Emergency crews found the crash when a passenger in the plane, Thomas “Tom” Duncan, 54, of Middletown, flagged down a patrol trooper.
The passenger of the aircraft eventually flagged down a patrol trooper. Around 11:20 p.m., a Miami Twp. fire official confirmed the wreckage was found.
Miamisburg resident Steve Pleasant said he saw a small airplane flying low and it appeared to crash on the other side of a tree line. He said the crash “lit up the whole sky.”
