Radar shows a lot more than rain

The radar can show a lot of things useful to meteorologists, such as rain, wind speeds and directions, hail, debris from tornadoes and a lot more.

But the radar also shows other things, including smoke, bugs, bats and birds. Here in Ohio, birds leaving their roosts early in the morning can be clearly seen on radar as a doughnut shape getting larger and larger.

We can also see bats leaving their caves in south-central Texas, bugs in high concentrations, and smoke from large fires.
