3 recent kidnappings in Ohio

A 51-year-old Pennsylvania man was arrested after the discovery of 12 girls in his home, one of whom was allegedly “gifted” to him by her parents. The woman who is now 18 years old was only 14 years old when her father allegedly gave her to Lee Kaplan after he helped the father financially.

We have compiled a list of recent kidnappings and kidnapping attempts in the area, which we have displayed below.

Middletown grandmother uses perfume to get rid of kidnapper 

Earlier this week a 61-year-old grandmother and her car were hijacked.

A masked man approached Joyce Kennedy outside her home and forced her into her own vehicle. Kennedy used a Bath and Body Works spray that was stashed in her car to temporarily blind her attacker.  The grandmother was able to kick the man out of her moving vehicle and drive to a local gas station to report the crime.

The Middletown police were not able to find the suspect, but are still investigating.

Girl shackled, held captive in basement for a year

In late May, a 13-year-old girl was found after being shackled in a basement for more than a year.

According to court documents, the girl was held captive for more than a year and fed spoiled scraps of food. She was shackled by her ankle to a basement beam and forced to use the restroom in a bucket that was filled with ammonia.  She eventually escaped by acquiring a set of keys to the shackles.

The two men accused of taking her hostage, Timothy Ciboro, 53, and  Esten Ciboro, 27, were arrested shortly after the girl was found.

Both of the men are facing charges of kidnapping and child endangering with specifications of torture, cruelty, abuse and to terrorize and inflict serious physical harm.

Trooper dragged and kidnapped victim found in a traffic stop

Just one day later a kidnapping victim was rescued following a high-speed pursuit that started with a state trooper being dragged behind a vehicle.

The pursuit began in Warren County and ended in Hamilton County following a crash.

The victim, Barbara McCain of Tiltonsville, Ohio, signaled to the trooper during the traffic stop that she was in need of help when the kidnapper, Thomas Gorman of Lakeland, FL., abruptly accelerated and tried to get away.

Gorman was booked into the Warren County Jail that day on the following charges:

  • Kidnapping
  • Two counts of felonious assault
  • Failure to comply with order or signal of police
  • Assault
  • Traffic violation

His bond was set at more than $700,000.
