Report: LexisNexis lays off 500

Law.com is reporting that LexisNexis is laying off about 500 employees in several locations.

Paraphrasing sources it does not name, the web site said the layoffs were “significantly larger than the usual July realignments at the company.” The site’s source put the layoffs in Dayton (Miami Twp.), New York, the Philadelphia area and Charlottesville, Va.

The site quoted a company spokesman confirming a reduction in personnel, without offering details about how many and where.

Marc Osborn, a LexisNexis spokesman, offered this response to the Dayton Daily News Monday:

“LexisNexis continuously reviews its needs, operations and other factors to identify what resources and services are necessary to optimally support our customers and improve business operations. As a result of this ongoing process, we regularly build teams in certain areas of the business and reduce in others to be able to deliver next-generation solutions to customers. On balance, the total number of employees across the LexisNexis business remains consistent with prior years.”

Osborn added: “Regarding Dayton, our company has a long history of operations and innovation in Ohio. The Dayton, Ohio (Miamisburg) site continues to be the largest Reed Elsevier and LexisNexis site globally. We remain committed to our flagship facility in Dayton and LexisNexis is making tremendous investments in our business and technology in Dayton with our New Lexis initiatives, which include the Lexis Advance product among others.”

The New York City-based company told the Dayton Daily News last year that it employs some 3,400 people at its Miami Twp. campus off Ohio 741, making the location its largest in terms of number of employees. At the time Alex Watson, LexisNexis executive vice president of operations, said the site’s “overall employment level” will remain steady.

On Friday, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released a report on job openings posted online. For June, LexisNexis had 122 jobs openings, the second largest number of openings for employers in the Dayton and Western Ohio area, according to the department.

LexisNexis’ number of job openings was second only to Kettering Health Network’s number, at 354, the report said.
