Robbery suspect arrested after 8-hour standoff

SIDNEY — An armed bank robbery suspect who barricaded himself in a hotel room at a complex that includes a Travelodge and the Country Hearth Inn and Suites has surrendered, Sidney police said late Monday night.

The man was escorted out of the Travelodge by law enforcement officers, bringing an end to the standoff that lasted more than eight hours.

The man taken into custody was identified as 21-year-old Carl Bruce Morton Jr. of Trotwood, according to authorities at the scene.

Negotiations continued late into Monday evening with the man who is suspected of robbing a nearby Chase bank. Shelby County sheriff’s deputies, troopers from the Ohio Highway Patrol and a SWAT team surrounded the address, 2009 W. Michigan St., after a black male dressed in a black hoodie and mask ran into the hotel, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Chase Bank at 2030 W. Michigan St., was robbed at about 3:15 p.m. and police and deputies responding to the robbery reported that they saw the suspect run to the complex where the two hotels are located, Sidney Police Chief Kevin Gessler told News Center 7’s Layron Livingston.

Law enforcement officers moved onlookers and media back from the address after the man reportedly threatened to begin firing the weapon he had in his possession, Gessler said.

Traffic on Ohio 47 near the hotel was blocked during the standoff.
