Shelby Co. Teen To Serve Maximum Sentence in Sidney Shooting

A Sidney area teen used his eyes, a smile and lips to attempt to communicate with his family in a Shelby County courtroom Wednesday afternoon as he awaited sentencing on a charge of felonious assault.

Bradley LeMaster, 18, of Herring Road near Sidney, lost that wide smile when the judge ordered him to serve the maximum sentence of eight years in prison for shooting a man.

"I would just like to apologize for what I did," said LeMaster, when asked by Shelby County Common Pleas Judge James Stevenson if he had anything to say before "I pass sentence."

The county prosecutor asked the judge "for the maximum sentence, your honor. There is no excuse for Mr. LeMaster's behavior," said Prosecutor Ralph Bauer.

According to Sidney police, LeMaster and Gary Barger, 22, of Sidney met the afternoon of Sept. 6, 2007, at a city park to end a longtime, ongoing feud when a shot was fired by LeMaster.

Barger survived the shooting. He was not in court for LeMaster's sentencing.

Barger's mother, Connie Withrow, was. "I hope the judge gives you what you deserve," said Barger's mom through a quivering lip, when given the opportunity to speak in the courtroom prior to the judge handing down the sentence.

LeMaster's girlfriend, Jessica Work, 21, of Sidney was also arrested and recently pleaded guilty to charge of obstructing justice. She will be sentenced later this month.

Sidney police said that she carried the gun, used in the shooting, in her purse and later denied knowing LeMaster when asked by police, according to police reports.
