Siri causing Apple users to accidentally call 911

Usually the Apple program “Siri” makes headlines for responding to questions in a humorous way, but this time she is stirring up some serious trouble.

Many have inadvertently discovered that if you say “211” to Siri, she will call 911 instead. This is because 211 is Europe’s version of 911, and as a safety feature, Apple programed the electronic assistant to call local emergency services whenever an emergency code from anywhere in the world is voiced.

This safety feature makes sense for international travelers, but online pranksters have unfortunately dicovered it, and are tricking people with social media posts like these:

Even though most hang up once they realize what is happening, these calls still tie up phone lines and occupy emergency service resources, endangering those calling on purpose who actually need help. Apple users are asked to refrain from voicing “211,” “999,” or “000” (other emergency service numbers) to Siri. Any voice variation of these numbers (like “two eleven” or “nine hundred and ninety-nine”) will cause a call.

However, users can feel free to ask Siri "What is zero divided by zero," which will result in a safe, humorous response. This inquiry will not result in any inadvertent calls, but it is sure to get a few laughs.
