Sloopy's Closes In Oregon District

A nightclub has been in Oregon District for 22 years closed for good over the weekend to make room for a brand-new bar that is expected to open on Friday.

News Center 7 spoke with the managers of what many considered the cornerstone bar of the Oregon District. They said Sloopy's was not paying the bills anymore.

The nightclub's owner is remodeling and opening a new bar in its place. The bar’s new manager, Jeff Edwards, who also owns and manages J Alan’s in downtown, said the new bar will be named “Bar Tiki.”

“Bar Tiki,” inspired by a Polynesian theme, will have grass huts, waterfalls and an authentic tropical menu with specialty rum drinks made with hand-squeezed fresh juices and imported rums.

Edwards said he hopes the new bar will attract a more mature, professional crowd, saying it is all part of a gradual revamping of the Oregon District and the entire downtown area.

However, management told News Center 7 that it was bittersweet to take down the old Sloopy’s sign, kind of like losing an old friend.

“Bar Tiki” will have a soft opening on Thursday with a grand opening Friday.
