Springboro restaurant shuts down; owner looking for other sites

The El Pueblo and Sammy’s Gourmet Burgers & Beers dual-concept restaurant at 776 N. Main S. (Ohio 741) in the Marketplace at Settler’s Walk retail center has closed its doors after five years, and its owner said this morning he will look for two smaller locations in the Miamisburg and Springboro areas to reopen as separate restaurants.

El Pueblo/Sammy’s founder Samuel Flores said in a phone interview that the high overhead costs involved in operating the 280-seat restaurant was the primary factor in the decision to close.

“We tried there for five years, and it was a great experience for us, and we appreciate the customers we had there,” Flores said. “But we want to split the concepts into two smaller locations, the way we have them in Blue Ash.”

Flores said he would like to have at least one of the two concepts up and running in about three months, with the other following soon afterward.

The closing affected about 40 employees, some of whom are working in the Blue Ash locations, Flores said.

In the Springboro restaurant, the El Pueblo Mexican portion occupied the larger section of the restaurant, while Sammy’s, with more of a sports-bar atmosphere, filled out a smaller portion. Customers could order from either menu no matter where they sit in the restaurant-sports bar.

Prior to Sammy’s/El Pueblo opening in the space in August 2010, the building had sat unused for two years. It formerly housed Encore restaurant.
