The National Association of Letter Carriers is hosting its annual food drive, Stamp Out Hunger, virtually this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dayton residents can participate in the food drive, which is going on right now, by donating online to support their local food banks and network of pantries.

The local NALC branch will be matching up to $10,000 in donations made and the National Headquarters NALC will match an additional $10,000.

“The NALC food drive’s timing is crucial,” said Michelle L. Riley, CEO of The Foodbank.

The Foodbank, located at 56 Armor Place in Dayton, receives most of its donations around holidays and enters the summer low on supplies, Riley explained.

“During this unprecedented time when families are home now more than ever, it is critical to ensure that we are able to get them the help they need,” Riley said.

Every dollar donated to The Foodbank creates six meals for someone in the Miami Valley.

In previous years, the food drive was typically on the second Saturday in May and residents left food at their mailboxes for letter carries to pick up and deliver to local food banks.

“As letter carriers in every neighborhood in the country six and seven days a week, we see the need and we cannot wait while food banks struggle, demand grows and people remain hungry,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “Once it is safe, we will return to the traditional food drive.”
