Rising from the ashes is a metaphor many Dayton-area restaurants and businesses have taken literally over the years.

“This building has a lot of history to it and more than its share of fires, too,” said Justin Kohnen, owner of Star City Brewing Company. “Back in the day, the ashes from the nearby blacksmith would periodically set the building’s roof on fire. Fortunately we’re not nearly as flammable as we once were … knock on wood.”

Star City Brewing is hosting the Peerless Mill Fire 16th Anniversary on Friday, Jan. 25. To mark the occasion, Miamisburg’s own Bear Axe Spices will be providing a number of hot peppers to use as infusions for Star City’s beers and the local fire department will be onsite with a touch-a-truck firetruck and be the beneficiary of 10 percent of the night’s sales.

“We’re also offering pay-it-forward buy a beer leading up to the event,” Kohnen said. “You can donate $5 or 100 loyalty points and we’ll make up the difference to buy a beer for our brave local firemen and women.”
