Christi Dodson, executive director of Dayton Right to Life, said the organization’s 18-member board —which includes Bryant — is still researching the levy and they plan to meet Monday to discuss it.
“The remarks by Mr. O’Bryant indicated we have taken a stance on the levy. We have not, “ Dodson said. “I think he jumped the gun.”
The PAC supports and endorses pro-life candidates and issues. Dodson said Bryant has been associated with Dayton Right to Life about three months and she appreciates “his intensity” to get involved.
“I think he spoke from a personal perspective. The board has not even discussed the levy yet,” she said. “They’re still gathering facts.”
Becki Brenner, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio, said Montgomery County Human Services Levy funding provides family planning services, well women exams and sexually transmitted disease exams only for about 600 patients a month in the Dayton area.
“This means cancer detection for some women. We do pap smears. We do mammograms,” Brenner said. “These are life saving services.”
Planned Parenthood’s lone clinic in downtown Dayton does not do abortions. The non-profit covering southwest Ohio provides services in 23 counties and 10 health center, including one in Cincinnati that does perform abortions.
Dayton Right To Life serves about 4,000 clients per year and frequently makes referral to levy-funded agencies. Dodson said the organization would like to see Planned Parenthood’s funding pulled and redirected to other organizations.
