Students model for sportswear catalog

Jean Silverstein of Centerville has worked for Miamisburg based Graphica for many years and has handled the Holloway Sportswear account for 10 years. “We’ve been developing the Holloway catalogs and started out using agency models,” Silverstein said. “But for the past few years we started hiring local talent.”

Silverstein said that this year’s catalog features 20 high school aged models and of the twenty included, 17 are students from the local area, many she found with the help of her daughter, Ella, who will be a junior at Centerville High School in the fall.

“Ella started modeling for the catalog when she was about 8 years old,” Silverstein said. “Now I tell her what I’m looking for in models — the look I’m after as far as hair color and build — and she looks on Facebook and at school and helps me find what I need.”

Since Holloway is a sportswear company, Silverstein generally seeks out athletes, though her own daughter never played a sport, herself, she has always been actively involved. “I have always enjoyed participating in the photos,” Ella said. “It’s fun.”

One of the students featured in this year’s newly completed catalog is Kelly Kavanaugh, a recent graduate of Centerville high school and a dancer since the age of 4. “I told Ella I wanted a redhead for the catalog and I liked Kelly’s look,” Jean said. “She found her and Kelly agreed right away.”

Kavanaugh, who will be attending Ohio State University in the fall, said modeling for the catalog was a unique experience and a lot of fun. “It took about two days to complete everything and it was a learning experience,” she said.

Recent Centerville graduates and football players Davin Fleming and Keith Beason were recruited because Silverstein was looking for athletic males for the cover. Fleming and Beason both fit the bill.

“I know the guys especially don’t know what to expect going in but it’s unusual for anyone to say no to this opportunity,” Silverstein said. “And they do get paid for this, just like any job.”

Both boys said they didn’t know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised at the outcome. “I was nervous about putting on makeup,” Fleming said. “I didn’t think it would take as much as it did!”

The entire process begins in the fall with the casting, with the actual photo shoot early in the year and the catalog wraps in late spring so it can be printed by early summer.

Silverstein said that using the local models has worked very well for the client because they get the outcome they want. “It’s just more realistic,” she said. “The kids are actual athletics and the client is all about being authentic.”
