Suspect in Springfield homicide speaks

It was first thought to be a suicide, and then it was ruled a homicide.

On Friday, the Springfield man charged with the death of his ex-girlfriend said she shot herself by accident.

Rumors have gone around about the night of Sept. 7 when Lori Estepp died. News Center 7 talked with Dustin Hatfield, 19, who is the being held in the Clark County Jail in connection with her death.

Hatfield said, "Gun was on the table. You know she was handling it as usual, you know, just playing with it."

Hatfield said he was in the kid's room upstairs as Estepp sat on the bed staring at her gun.

"I go and fix the baby gate and the next thing I know I hear the gunshot. I run in there and there she is bent over bleeding," Hatfield said

She was a happy person and the love of his life, he said.

"I got a tattoo on me that say property of Lori Diane the boss. In that relationship, she was the boss if anything," Hatfield said.

Hatfield said although he has a new wife, Estepp is the only one who truly knew him.

"Don't judge me by my past and the tattoos and thinking that I'm just a criminal. I'm still a little kid at heart," Hatfield said.

Family and friends of Estepp say otherwise.

Missy Turton of Springfield said, "We've seen everything. Dustin wiping off the prints, Dustin dropping the gun in the blood. I held Lori in my arms. I was covered in Lori's blood. I know what he done."

Police said they have enough evidence to show Hatfield's actions led to Estepp's death.

Police Chief Steve Moody said, "All that evidence that we've gathered will be presented to a jury at trial and that's the proper venue for this case."

Hatfield remains in jail on a $50,000 bond. No trial date has been set yet for the case.
