“IDS includes agencies like the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator, Mental Health, Family Advocacy, Suicide Prevention, Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program Treatment, Drug Demand Reduction, School Liaison Officer, and Equal Opportunity Office,” said Jan Devitt, community support coordinator for Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. “These agencies have always been taking care of people, but we used to focus on response to the circumstances our Airmen and their families face. Now, we are shifting the paradigm towards prevention instead of reaction.”
As a part of this paradigm shift, the IDS is tracking the circumstances that brings Airmen to their respective agencies and then sharing that data across the IDS to track trends.
“We are examining the types of circumstances that these various agencies are seeing, and we monitor those trends and that data in order to determine how to best take care of our Airmen and their families,” explained Devitt. “We’ve found that a lot of the issues our community faces are actually related to each other, and we may not have recognized that correlation if we were only looking at one agency’s data.”
After collecting this data, the agencies meet and discuss what they are seeing and how they can best support the installation.
“By bringing everyone together to talk about what they are seeing, it helps us to tailor our outreach and programs to what our community needs,” said Devitt.
