Tearful Courtroom Appearance During Arraignment

It was a tearful day in court for three of four women charged with stealing from the Upper Valley Mall and hitting and killing a man in the parking lot.

The woman who police said was driving the car will appear in court later this week. The three other women faced a judge in Springfield on Monday.

The judge raised the women's bond from $100,000 to $200,000.

Mahogany Patterson cried so hard she could barely look at the judge. Her aunt who was in the courtroom to support her niece and her two friends also cried during the court appearance.

Patterson's aunt, Angela Easley, said she did not think the judge would raise the bond that high. Easley said it is difficult to know that her niece could go to prison, but agrees with prosecutors that the women committed a crime.

She said, "They did wrong, they have to pay for what they did. We feel for their family and everything."

Prosecutors said the women shoplifted from the Macy's store at the mall in Springfield. They said as the women fled the scene, their car struck and killed John Deselem, 49, in the parking lot.

Patterson, Toneisha Gunnell, Alicia McAlmont and Renada Manns have all been indicted on charges of murder, aggravated robbery, involuntary manslaughter and theft.
