Theft Suspect Returns To Court On Additional Charges

A familiar face returned to a Miami County courtroom on Wednesday. This time he was there on a breaking and entering charge.

Robert Bates, 36, of Dayton, is currently serving time in prison. On Monday, Bates pleaded not guilty to a new charge of breaking and entering.

His appearance in court on Wednesday was just a formality because there was an indication that Bates was going to change his plea. And, that is what he did.

Bates admitted to a 2003 break-in at the Dairy Queen in Troy. He was immediately sentenced to 12 months in prison to run concurrent with the sentence he received in March for three armed robberies in Miami County.

Bates is currently serving 13 years on a long list of theft-related offenses in Miami and Montgomery counties. The thefts took place in September and October of 2003.
