Ohio Sauerkraut Festival in Waynesville: 5 things to know

Each year, visitors can’t seem to get enough egg rolls, pizza, cookies and pies made with sauerkraut at the Ohio Sauerkraut Festival held in Waynesville.

Here are 5 things to know about the annual event:

1. It started in 1970. Waynesville hosted its first Sauerkraut Festival on Oct. 3, 1970. More than 500 pounds of sauerkraut was served to an estimated 1,500 visitors.

2. Big crowds. The festival draws about 350,000 to Warren County and raises funds for a wide range of local nonprofits.

3. (Literally) tons of food. About 7 tons of sauerkraut are served by vendors who come from across the country to participate.

4. Bringing money to the region. The annual festival is listed as one of the area's top annual tourist attractions and is credited with drawing a big chunk of people who spend more than $1 billion a year in Warren County, according to the Warren County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

5. Its not just food. Each year 450 artisans from 28 states sell hand crafted items during the festival.
