Townsend, 48, is one of two new Montgomery County superintendents, joining Vandalia-Butler City Schools Rob O‘Leary, who was promoted from assistant superintendent.

Here are five things to know about Townsend:
-BACKGROUND: She grew up in the Cleveland suburb of Olmsted Falls and graduated from Westlake High School. Married for 20 years with one son, she is no relation to West Carrollton City Manager Brad Townsend.
-AREA TIES: Townsend came to New Bremen in 2015 from Springfield City Schools, where she was director of student services, elementary programs and online learning for three years. She served as superintendent for the North Dayton School of Discovery, a charter school, from 2010-2012.

-EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: She has: a bachelor's degree, elementary education, Ohio Dominican University; master's degree, administration and supervision, Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College); PhD, education, Walden University. She served for several years as a teacher and principal in Maryland and Florida before working in Dayton.
-SALARY AND CONTRACT: She will be paid $138,000 annually for three years expiring July 31, 2020. Her contract includes annual 2 percent raises pending satisfactory evaluations. The board of education can increase her salary, but not reduce it "except as provided by law." Relocation reimbursement includes up to $5,000.

-FIRST-YEAR GOALS: Said Townsend: "Create a structure and a process to look at student growth and achievement, and instruction in the classroom. That's our big focus this year. We're digging into some student data, learning how to use that data effectively to improve what we're doing."
