Authorities said when the man went to check on the dogs, he saw flames and rushed to call for help. The fire spread to two homes shattering glass, melting siding and damaging some of the interior.
Fire officials said they had no problem fighting the blaze, but the damage was extensive. Investigators said no one was injured in the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
