“We felt a calling to come back. We were Christmas Décor in the Miami Valley,” Ben Johnson said. Their service area stretches from Piqua to Springboro along with some outlying areas.
Christmas Décor by Patriot Illuminations is part of the couple’s Patriot Illuminations, a landscape and architectural lighting business.
The business has changed the past few years with fewer contracts with institutions such as hospitals, which have had to cut back, Ben Johnson said. The result was more effort to add to the residential customer rolls.
Most people who call Christmas Décor have some idea of what they want from the decorating, said Jessie Johnson.
For example, most want the building roofline decorated with lights. Another popular Christmas Décor offering is wrapping of trees with lights to make the tree appear full of lights, she said.
“These are people who want decorations and can’t do it themselves. They are looking for us to do it. Our guys are very comfortable on a roof,” she said.
The lights used have all been switched from incandescent to LED, for energy efficiency and service reasons, Jessie Johnson said.
A lease-type arrangement is made with each customer for the company employees to put up and take down the lights/decorations, maintain them while in use and then store them after the holidays.
Ben Johnson said they plan to emphasize that Christmas Décor, though a seasonal part of the business, is a key part of Patriot Illuminations overall business. “This is not just an add on for use. This is what we do. We are a lighting company,” he said.
