A neighbor called 911 early Saturday morning to alert authorities about suspicious activity at the corner of Aukerman and Bruce streets.
Police said 20-year-old Matthew Maggard, an electrician for the district, teamed up with Jesse Koeller, 20, and Michael Williams, 19, to steal TVs being stored in the building.
Maggard tried to plead his innocence, according to police, saying he was moving the TVs for the district. Police said he later told his boss he had planned to borrow them to watch the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
Eaton Superintendent Brad Neavin said Maggard is “an excellent employee. He's worked with us for a little over a year … no reason to believe anything like this would happen.”
Jeff Blankenship, the parent of a soon-to-be Eaton kindergartner said he’s disappointed. “School districts are hard up enough for money.” He said the neighborhood is usually very quiet.
“There was no one who had any authority to be in this property at 12:30, 1 at night,” Neavin said.
