Because Hemsath was unable to pay for the entire surgery at the time, Joseph set up a payment plan and treated the dog.
“I thought she did a very nice thing for me,” Hemsath said. “They did for me what others wouldn’t.”
So when Hemsath learned of the “My Vet’s the Best” contest, she nominated Joseph by writing about her experience.
Last month, Joseph and Hemsath learned that Joseph was one of six finalists in the contest that recognizes veterinarians across the country that have made a positive impact on their pet patients and local communities.
The winner of the contest is selected by votes from the public. The contest winner will receive $1,000 for the treatment of animals in need, or those that do not have pet insurance.
Joseph noted that the nomination reflects the effort of the entire My Favorite Pet clinic staff.
About Dr. Joseph: Dr. Joseph, an owner of My Favorite Pet, has practiced veterinary medicine for 26 years. A graduate of the University of Dayton and the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, she has worked at My Favorite Pet since 2006. Other veterinarians working there include Dr. Ann Impson and Dr. Deb Bishop.
How to vote: People may vote for Joseph on the Pets Best Insurance's website at https://forms.petsbest.com/vote. Voting deadline is Thursday, Aug. 16.
Other recent recognition: Earlier this year, My Favorite Pet clinic received a Dayton Dragons and Vectren Community All-Star Award. The Vandalia Fire Department nominated the animal clinic for the award. Joseph said that a dog had been hit by a train, and the firefighters did not know who owned the dog. They brought the dog to the clinic and the clinic staff attended to the dog throughout the day.
About Dr. Joseph's pets: Bailey, a Labrador retriever adopted from a local rescue group, accompanies Joseph to the vet clinic where the dog meets and greets the patients. Joseph also has several cats, a miniature goat, miniature horses and horses. She also cares for her son's Walker coonhound.
