Vectren to relocate Germantown gas meters

Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio will relocate more than 300 of Germantown’s indoor natural gas meters to outdoor locations to improve system reliability for customers, according to a media release.

The meters will be moved to outdoor locations next to customer homes as part of Vectren’s multi-year plan to modernize its gas infrastructure throughout Ohio.

Historically, utility companies installed indoor gas meters because older-style meters were more stable in a temperature-controlled environment. Officials said modern gas meters have the same accuracy rate whether installed indoors or outdoors.

Locating the meters outdoors enables meter readings, as well as maintenance and/or repair work, to be completed without accessing the customer’s property. It also reduces the immediate danger if a gas leak were to occur, officials said.

The project is expected to continue through November. Customers who are affected will receive a notification letter with information on how to schedule an appointment to have their meter moved.
