MORE ABOUT LUPUS: Lupus is an acute and chronic (lifelong) autoimmune disease in which the immune system goes awry, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage to nearly every organ system in the body. An estimated 1.5 million American have a form of Lupus. Ninety percent of people diagnosed with Lupus are women; however, men and children also develop the disease. Lupus is two to three times more common among African Americans, Hispanics/Latinos, Native Americans, and Asians - a disparity that remains unexplained.
