Walmart’s new eBook service competes for Amazon customers

Walmart is looking to take a chunk of Amazon’s customer base with its new eReader services.

The retail giant has partnered with Kobo to create Walmart eBooks by Rakuten Kobo, which will include a book each month for a $9.99 subscription.

Walmart eBooks will be available on the Kobo readers, but customers can also access the program through iOS and Android apps. The Kobo Aura reader is available at 1,000 stores. Some of the more than 6 million titles will also be found on digital book cards sold in more than 3500 Walmart stores.

If shoppers sign up now, they will receive a 30-day free trial and $10 off their first eBook bought beyond the one book provided in the monthly subscription.

The eReaders and eBooks are direct competition to Amazon’s Kindle, which the online giant has been offering for years. Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited program also costs $9.99 per month but offers unlimited reading and listening on any device. However, the product sells fewer titles and not many bestsellers.

Amazon’s other eBook option, Audible, costs $14.95 each month and offers more titles, especially bestsellers in the audiobook category. The monthly subscription allows for one free book each month.

For customers who want to buy an e-reader, Kobo readers range from $99.99 to $229.99, and Kindles range from $79.99 to $279.99.
