WATCH: Here’s what it looked like when tornadoes moved through Dayton region

Tornadic thunderstorms tore through the Miami Valley from 9 p.m. until almost 1 a.m. on Monday evening.

A tool that your Storm Center 7 team uses to track thunderstorms is velocity. The velocity radar product shows the motion of a storm to and from the radar site.

Using velocity we are able to see if a storm is rotating. An indicator of rotation in a storm is called velocity couplet.

This is when you see a tight area where there is red (away from the radar) and green (towards the radar).

Not only were the storms producing this radar signature Memorial Day night, there were ground reports of tornadoes.
