WATCH: Temperature gun shows heat wave creates risk for burns on outside surfaces

Surface temperatures are often significantly higher than the air, and this puts children and adults at risk for burns at playgrounds, parks and other areas outside.

“Things that are dark and metal objects are going to heat up fast, and they’re going to keep their heat,” a Washington Twp. firefighter said.

His department provided News Center 7 with a thermal imaging camera, so we could test objects at a playground. A park bench measured 113 degrees, while the blacktop was 121 degrees.

As temperatures continue to climb into the weekend, residents should take caution, and may want to consider spending their time indoors.

Also, don’t forget that dogs’ paw pads could become burned on surfaces as well.
