11-Year-Old Girl Dies In Darke Co. Crash

It was a difficult scene for even the most seasoned police and fire department veterans.

One officer told WHIO-TV, "When children die in traffic accidents, that hits hard."

Two young lives, one lost and one changed forever.

The head on crash happened on Arcanum-Hollansburg Road in Darke County about 7:40 a.m. Tuesday. Grace Hudson lives just off Hollansburg-Arcanum Road and heard the crash.

"I was sitting at my computer and I heard a big old thump out there," said Hudson.

Authorities said 17-year-old Samuel Bevins was headed east in his Saturn. His sister, 11-year-old Sarah, was in the passenger seat.

For some reason, deputies said, Samuel decided to pass the slow-moving car in front of him, ignoring the double-yellow line on the road.

Chief Mark Whittaker said, "They were on the crest of a hill and when they crossed into the opposite line of traffic another car came across the hill and hit them head on."

CareFlight rushed Sarah to Miami Valley Hospital, where she later died. Emergency crews continue to work to get the other drivers out of the vehicles.

Her brother, Samual, and the other driver, 26-year-old Holly Beam of New Madison, were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

"Our hearts go out to this family and their loss. There's nothing we can say that's going to help them out," said Whittaker.

This was the seventh fatal crash in Darke County in 2010.

Deputies said this was a stark reminder for other teen drivers about the importance of slowing down and following the rules of the road.

There is no word yet, if Samuel Bevins will face any charges as a result of the crash.
