The teenager was scheduled to appear in Horry County Family Court in South Carolina Thursday morning. However, the hearing was postponed for 10 days.
Authorities said the teen was taken into custody shortly after his father was found shot to death inside the family’s motor home. Ayers was vacationing with his son and his wife, Teresa, who is a current Springfield police captain.
Horry County police responded to their campsite on the report of a domestic dispute. Investigators said the boy made the 911 call to dispatchers saying he shot his father because he was attacking his mother.
Authorities said the boy has been charged as a juvenile with murder and is being held at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
Police and court records in Springfield show no previous reports of domestic violence involving Howard and Teresa Ayers.
