Exclusive:  ‘Honored, humbled’ Anthony Grant talks to Mike Hartsock

New Dayton Flyers coach Anthony Grant spoke with WHIO’s Mike Hartsock on Thursday evening, giving his first reactions on a whirlwind day that saw him take the reins at his alma mater.

On his excitement of being named the new UD coach: "It's an unbelievable feeling. As a graduate of UD, having played there and seen what that place is all about, I'm humbled. I'm honored. I'm excited. I just can't wait to get started. I'm looking forward to making the transition."

On whether he had hoped earlier in his career to get this job: "Every time I saw this job come open, in the back of my mind, I was hoping that one day I would have the opportunity to lead this program. I told Neil (Sullivan) this. For me, I love my alma mater. I want to see Dayton do well. Personally, I feel I want to lead the program. I want what's best for Dayton. I want to thank Neil, Eric, Tim, everybody that was involved in this, for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. I'm going to do everything in my power to continue the success Dayton has enjoyed throughout the history of the program and what Archie has done of late. He has elevated the profile of the program nationally. We're going to try to take it and build on it from there.

On what he has to do to improve what Dayton already has: "The first thing I've got to do is develop a relationship with the guys on campus, the current players. I've got to develop great relationships with the recruits that are coming in. We hope to be able to develop a relationship with them where they feel comfortable staying with the University of Dayton. We've got to get out and develop relationships in the community with the local coaches and expand from there. To me it's all about the relationships you develop and the way you run your program. Hopefully, over the course of my career, people can see I'm a guy who's going to do things the right way."
